The perfect pie crust can make all the difference in a great pie and a good pie.
This is a fun recipe for kids to make as it’s like playing with play-doh.
The secret to a perfect pie crust is keeping the flour and butter cold before mixing. This allows the butter to create a buttery taste when you bite into the crust.
If making the pie crust ahead of time, refrigerate dough until ready to use.
If making a cold pie (like chocolate pudding pie), you need to bake the pie crust for 20 minutes, then cool before adding the filling.
Here is what you need
Double this recipe if making two crusts or creating a topping on top.
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (keep it in the refrigerator before use)
- 2 teaspoons sugar (add 1 more teaspoon if making a sweet pie)
- 1-2 teaspoons salt (optional)
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) of cold butter
- 2 Tablespoons of cold milk
One Bowl Method:
Mix flour, sugar and salt into a large bowl.
Cut butter into tiny pieces and add to flour mixture.
Using a pastry blender or your hands, work the butter into the flour.
Sprinkle the milk on top. Stir until dough becomes tough to mix.
Roll the dough out onto a floured board.
Using a dull knife, cut a round circle so it covers the pie dish. Carefully place the pie crust into the dish.
With a fork, make a few pricks in the dough so it doesn’t bubble up during baking.
Add your filling.
If adding a pie crust topping, add carefully.
Place in pre-heated oven.
Most fruit pies bake for 40 minutes.
